Your Mac has a built-in backup feature call Time Machine and it allows you to automatically backup personal data, documents, emails, photos and more.

How to Back up your Mac

Firstly you will need an external storage device such as a USB drive, Thunderbolt drive or any storage device compatible with Mac. Make sure the storage device is use one for the Mac back up and not to store any other files. Your backup disk should ideally have at least twice the storage capacity of every disk or volume you’re backing up.

Once you connect your storage device to your Mac, your Mac should ask you if you want to use it for Time Machine. If this doesn’t happen then follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top left of your screen. If you’re using an earlier version of macOS you click System Preferences then click time machine. If you’re on macOS Ventura or later then it will be System Settings, click General tab then click Time Machine.
  2. Select your external storage device as your backup destination in the Time Machine settings. Again, if on an earlier version of macOS, click Select Backup Disk and follow the instructions on screen. If macOS Ventura or later, click the add button (+), then follow the instructions on screen.
  3. Once you select your storage device in the Time Machine settings, Time Machine will automatically begin making periodic backups. You can start a backup manually if you wish. Simply choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu

Time machine makes backups hourly, daily, and weekly. You can change how frequent the backups take place. Open Time Machine settings, click Options, then choose a setting from the Back up frequency menu. The first backup ill take some time but it should be much quicker doing future backups.
