Thanks to Migration Assistant, you can now transfer data to your new Mac using migration assistant. Migration Assistant allows you to transfer data across from your old Mac or even from a Time Machine backup. Things You Need to Know Before You Start:
- Make sure your software is updated-Is your old Mac running OS X7? Make sure your software is updated.
- Name your old device-Maybe you haven’t named your old laptop, it’s important you name it. Open System Preferences –Sharing– and then type your name in the Computer Name field.
- Make sure both devices are fully charged– Both laptops need to be plugged into power to avoid unnecessary disappointment in the middle of the migration process.
- Get your cables ready (FireWire, Thunderbolt, Ethernet)- You can either use a cable or Wi-Fi network to transfer data, but a direct connection is the fastest.
Let’s Get Down to Business:
Starting with your old Mac:
- Make sure your old Mac is connected to your new Mac-Use a cable of your choice.
- When using local Wi-Fi, make sure both laptops are connected to the same Wi-Fi.
Next your New MacBook
- Start a Finder window
- Then click on Applications
- To access Migration Assistant, double-click on the utility folder.
- Click continue
- Type your administrator password if need be
- Click OK.
- When prompted select how you want to transfer data
- Click Continue
Now let’s get back to your old Mac:
Repeat the above steps:
- Launch a Finder window
- Then click on Applications

On your New Mac
- Migration Assistant will be searching for a source. Select your old device (if you happen to be using a Time Machine backup, you’ll select your Time Machine hard drive.
- Then continue
- Expect a security code o appear on the screen
Go back to your old Mac
- While here, confirm the code (the code should match).
- Click Continue
Finally, head back to your new Mac
- Select the files, settings, and apps you want to transfer to your new device.
- Click Continue
Data migration will probably take a while, so be patient. After a short period of time, the transfer of your data to your new Mac will be complete. Make sure to check that it’s all completely transferred.
